Edgerton Model Railroad Club Holiday Open House

While the activities are indoors, it is still chilly in the greenhouse - coats and hats are a good idea.

Wickham Farms

In the fall of 2008, we had been in the Rochester, NY area for a little over a year and we wanted to take our son (then, not quite a year and a half) pumpkin picking. My ROCpoppa's co-worker recommended a place in Penfield called Wickham Farms, so we decided to check it out. Four years later, and we are now taking both of our sons there, year round.

Wickham Farms has become part of our regular rotation of family field trips. We can play a round of miniature golf, visit some farm animals, sit on a tractor, dig in a huge sandbox, bounce on the jumping pillow, climb on the playground, and get some ice cream. There are even batting cages, but I'm holding out a bit longer before they can try those out.

Tuesday is a great day to visit since miniature golf is $2 per player ($2 for TWO-sday; normally $5 per person), plus you get double punches on both the ice cream and the golf/jumping pillow frequent buyer cards. Not bad. There are other specials available too.

There are 18 holes on the mini golf course, and each one has a little obstacle to it. But they are all easy enough that the kids won't get frustrated. Along the way, you'll also pass the chickens and goats, which always provides some entertainment. Then the final hole looks like a chicken coop, which is kind of fun in itself.

After our 18 holes, the kids usually want to bounce on the jumping pillow for a bit ($5 each; if your child is under 5, you pay their age). Shoes must be removed, and I strongly recommend socks. The jumping pillow can get hot in the sun, and burn those little tootsies*. The nice thing about the jumping pillow is that you get a bracelet after paying, so the kids can go on and off as often as they'd like during your visit.

*UPDATE: If your kids are not wearing socks when you visit, and they'd like to try out the jumping pillow, you can purchase socks in a variety of sizes in the barn.

If you wander around a bit, you'll notice a cow that the kids can "milk" (it's just water, but it's still fun), a tractor to sit on, some photo-opp stands, and a bunny garden. There is also a playground with two climbing walls, two slides, a bridge, and more. The playground is available free of charge. Another freebie is the huge sandbox. We usually bring some pails, shovels, and trucks with us, or you can rent a tractor there for $2 each.

Inside is a cute shop where you can buy honey, cheese, pancake mix, syrup, salad dressing, salsa, spices, and random trinkets. Seasonally, they also sell plants and flowers. If you're hungry, their menu includes pizza, sandwiches, sweet potato fries, and ice cream.

During the fall, Wickham Farms also features a kiddie train ride, a corn maze, tractor ride, an "apple orchard" just for kids to pick, and a carved pumpkin display.

Wickham Farms is located at 1821 Fairport Nine Mile Point Road, Penfield, NY (right next to the Eastside YMCA). The entire farm is stroller-friendly, and the restroom inside the barn has a diaper changing table. There are two outhouses by the miniature golf course (with running water!), but they do not have diaper changing tables in either one. While there are lots of options on the menu, you may also bring your own food as long as you enjoy it outside the barn.

Powder Mills Park Fish Hatchery

The first time we drove past Powder Mills Park, I was more interested in the "mushroom house" next to it. I took my son there specifically so I could get a better view of a home that looks like something straight out of the Ewok Village - Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor, to be exact, for all you fanboys and fangirls out there. I love driving by and imagining what it would be like to actually live there.

Turns out the park is fun, too.

There are six pools holding tons and tons of trout at different ages. They are certainly not the prettiest fish, but they are still fun to watch. Bring quarters and a plastic cup or bag so you can buy fish food pellets from the dispensers at the park. When your kids throw the food into the water, the trout make a mad dash to get some. Caution: they splash, especially the big ones.

After we feed the fish, we usually stop by the two ponds. The first is next to the fish pools; there are usually some more trout in there as well as ducks and geese. (beware of goose feces as you walk around)

The second pond is across the park road. There are benches in the shade to enjoy the pond view, as well as a little dock for fishing or checking out the pond. My boys love to scare me by hanging over the railing on the dock. I hate being "that mom," you know, overly cautious. But at the same time, I do not want to have to jump into that pond. Ever. Gross.

Powder Mills Park Fish Hatchery is located at 115 Park Road in Pittsford, NY. There is a gazebo with picnic tables by the fish pools, so you can bring lunch or snacks. However, I have yet to find a restroom there. Thanks to my fellow ROCmomma Kim for providing the following information about the restrooms: They are located in the park office building adjacent to the six fish pools. Hours are limited to when the office is open.

Parking is free, and the park is stroller-friendly. If you have older children, there are some trails through the woods that can be fun. We started out on them once, but I quickly decided that we needed one adult per child at this stage, with a 2 1/2 and a 5 year old. When you walk back toward the parking lot, before crossing the bridge over the creek, follow the creek to the right into the woods and you'll see the worn trails. That part is definitely not stroller-friendly.

If you are looking for a low-key place to take the kids and get some fresh air, Powder Mills Park is a great place. If everyone still has energy to burn after visiting the Fish Hatchery, there are some other areas to stop along Park Road and visit more of Powder Mills Park.

Paddle Boats on Irondequoit Bay

A few weeks ago, Groupon featured a deal on paddle boat rentals. My ROCpoppa and I thought it sounded like fun, but our printer isn't working so we didn't actually get the Groupon (different story). Regardless, we gave it try!

We packed up the kids and went to Bayside Boat & Tackle at 1350 Empire Boulevard in Rochester, NY. Helpful hints:

• Make sure everyone uses the potty before heading out; I don't believe there are facilities on the premises
• Load up on sunblock, bring hats and sunglasses, and bring water bottles - there are cup holders on the boats. 
• They provide the life jackets. 
• Go early since the bigger boats tend to go out in the afternoon, and they can create some waves that will cause a bumpy ride on the paddle boats. 
• Call ahead to make an appointment for your rental. Unfortunately, we did not do this.

When we arrived, there were no other customers. The person who helped us even said he'd throw in an extra 15 minutes on top of our hour. We paid inside the shop and were instructed to wait under the tent in the back. There are tables and chairs so the kids were comfortable, however we waited about 45 minutes. As soon as we were seated, there was an influx of groups who had reserved pontoon boats for a specific time. Our friendly helper inside was stuck checking people in. His one assistant was prepping the pontoons and helping the groups get on their merry way.

Several snacks and rounds of "Old McDonald" later, we finally got our life jackets and our boats. Fair warning: there is a small, steep hill to walk down before getting to the dock. The path to the pontoon dock is paved, and the dock is in really good condition. However, the path to the paddle boat dock has some gravel, which actually made it a bit slippery. Then there is the dilapidated dock. If the Bayside employee hadn't walked onto it first, I would not have proceeded.

Once aboard the paddle boat, be prepared to work your leg muscles a bit. The boats are easy to handle, and it was so much fun to take the kids on their first boating experience. The kids enjoyed being out on the water, and we did too.

Bottom line: paddle boats are a fun way to spend a morning with the kids. However, I'm not sure I can give two thumbs up to Bayside Boat & Tackle. I think I'd like to try a different venue next time.

Road Trip Tomorrow: Go to the Geneseo Air Show

My husband joked that I'm going to lose street cred because yesterday's Family Fun This Weekend post  did not include the Geneseo Airshow. I'm making up for it now. And fear not! If you missed it today, you can still go tomorrow.

The airshow begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 15, with performances every 10 to 20 minutes, and the final performance at 4:30 p.m. The performances were pretty amazing, and the pilots were clearly talented. I had my doubts before we got there, but happily I was wrong.

If the kids get tired of watching the airplanes, take a walk around to see tons of planes on the ground. Our favorite was the shark plane, below.

 There's even a huge plane that you can walk inside! (my boys & I are on the steps, below)

The kids loved it! But we wish we had been a little better prepared for the event. So, I urge you to take your kids tomorrow, but there are some helpful things to know before you go.

THE BASICS:

• Sunday, July 15 from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
• Located on a ginormous field on Big Tree Lane in Geneseo, NY (there are signs when you get close; you can't miss it)
• Admission is $20 per adult; kids under 12 are free
• Parking is free; there is a shuttle from the parking lot to the viewing area, but it may not be necessary for everyone (the walk isn't that far)
• Admission is cash only; all on-site vendors are cash-only; there are no ATMs on site
• On-site food options include: pizza, hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, gourmet grilled cheese & soups, ice cream, frozen drinks, fresh lemonade, and even frozen cheesecake on a stick!
• There are lots of port-potties, however there is no diaper changing area

WHAT TO BRING:

• Folding chairs and/or blanket
• Umbrellas or beach umbrella for shade (we had the kids sit in their canopied red wagon & they were fine)
• A cooler with lots of water
• You may bring your own food
• Sunblock; be sure to reapply every 1-2 hours
• Hats, sunglasses

Adventure Landing

Today is a great day to go to Adventure Landing with your kids. Every Thursday and Monday is "All You Can Play Day" from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This means that you pay $8 per person for unlimited mini-golf, admission to the WOW! Factory, and 10 game tokens. They also offer this special on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon.

There are three different mini-golf courses at Adventure Landing. Golf is usually $5-7 per game, per person. So if you play on two of the courses, you've already gotten your money's worth for each adult on All You Can Play Day. There are fun obstacles on each hole to keep things interesting, but the majority is par two so the kids can keep up.

After a round or two, take a break indoors in the WOW! Factory. Admission is usually $5 per person, so the special pricing on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays is definitely worth it. You walk through a heavy plastic curtain into a three-floored "room" that looks like a factory. There are hundreds of colorful, squishy foam balls everywhere and plenty of ways to shoot them around. Stuff the balls into a suction tube on the first level and launch the balls up high. Go upstairs and load balls into the canons to shoot down below. There are stairs, but there are also plenty of places to climb, plus a three-story twisty slide. This was fun, but I would definitely skip the $5 per person if we were there on a day without the discount.

After exiting the WOW! Factory, who wouldn't be drawn to all the bright lights of the arcade games?  Good thing we had ten tokens each. The tokens are usually 20-25 cents each, depending on how many you purchase. My advice is to go for the games that reward you with tickets, because chances are your kids will want to trade 100 tickets for a 10-cent bouncy ball on the way out. My fellow ROCmomma Aly had taken her son to Adventure Landing and somehow they ended up with hundreds of tickets. She felt they got more per game than at other arcades. Our experience did not match up, and I think it's just a matter of luck.

The kids had fun playing skee ball, Frogger, and just pushing buttons that blink and make noise. My youngest even figured out that if you push enough buttons on Dance Dance Revolution - despite not inserting any tokens - it will play an entire song so you can show off your own moves.

So $5-7 per game of golf, plus $5 for the WOW! Factory admission, and $2.50 in tokens, all for $8 is a really great deal. You can also add on a fee for the batting cages, the indoor ropes course, or the teddy bear factory, but we did not try those out.

Adventure Landing is located at 3340 West Ridge Road in Greece, NY. There is a cafe serving pizza, hot dogs, chicken fingers, cheeseburgers, snacks, desserts, and drinks. You can choose to eat indoors or out; although there is nothing specifically that indicates whether or not you can bring your own food. We went after lunch, so we avoided the meal-issue. The women's restroom has a baby changing table (but I cannot speak for the men's room).

5 Reasons to Love Perinton Park

Perinton Park is my favorite park in the ROC area and it was introduced to me by my fellow ROCmomma Corie. It is located at 99 O'Connor Road, Fairport, NY (at Fairport Road & O'Connor Road). There are so many reasons why it's my favorite, where do I begin?

First, it is one of the few playgrounds in the shade. Huge trees surround the play structures so they don't get scorching hot, and we stay cooler as well. We've been to plenty of playgrounds where the equipment was so hot, we couldn't even stay to play.

Second, below the play equipment is sand, rather than wood chips or gravel. My kids love to dig so we usually bring a few pails, shovels, and plastic trucks. I've learned to bring extras, because other kids always want to join us. One tip: label your sand toys with your last name using permanent marker. Sometimes a borrowed toy will inadvertently end up in another part of the playground, and this makes it easy to claim it back.

Third, there are three different sections to the playground structures. There is a larger, higher section for bigger kids, a medium section...

...and even a lower, smaller section for little ones. There is a yellow slide behind my son in the picture below that has such a low incline, even a tiny tot can slide down.

There are also rocking toys (pictured below) and swings - baby swings, regular swings, and one swing for children with special needs.

The fourth reason why Perinton Park is my favorite is the Erie Canal. We usually bring our big red wagon (we used to bring the stroller; the park is definitely stroller friendly) and once the kids are tired of the playground, we walk past the basketball courts and up to the Erie Canal path. Your kids will have fun counting the ducks, boats, and kayaks. Plus it's a really pretty walk.

Another thing we love about Perinton Park is the train tracks. When you get up to the Erie Canal path, if you walk to the left, you just might see a train. There are a couple of spots where the tracks are visible right from the path. Or, when you're ready to leave, you can turn right out of the parking lot and follow O'Connor Road around the bend, and there are two railroad crossings. On the left by each crossing, there are businesses with large parking lots. We usually trespass for about 15-20 minutes in one of those lots to eat a snack in the car and wait to see a train pass by.

Added bonus: on the other side of Fairport Road, before turning on to O'Connor Road, there is a gas station with a Dunkin Donuts drive-through window. Such easy access if ROCmomma or ROCpoppa needs a tasty beverage before or after the park!

To be fair, I have a few complaints as well. First, there are only about five picnic tables by the playground and people often "claim" them for their entire visit. I have watched families finish their lunch, then leave all their sippy cups and water bottles on the table while they play. They return to the table only when they're ready to pack up and leave, and meanwhile the table has been unused and unusable (is that a word?) for an hour or so. It would be so much nicer if groups could use the table to eat lunch, then pack up and leave their belongings off to the side so that another group might eat their lunch at the table afterward. It just seems like the courteous thing to do, but, ah well.

My other complaint is that there is a bit of a walk to the restroom from the playground. As much as we encourage, "Don't wait til it's too late," we usually end up with wet pants if the restroom is more than a few feet away. If your child waits until they're hopping on one foot before telling you they need the potty, I recommend bringing a couple changes of clothes just in case.

Brown's Berry Patch

This past Saturday, we were looking for something different to do with the kids and decided to try Brown's Berry Patch.  It's a bit of a drive to Waterport, but it was peak week for strawberries, plus we have heard some great things about the farm. I must say, we had a berry good time. (Yep, I went there.)

First we walked into the Marketplace. You could definitely spend some time - and some money - in there. They have unique mustards, jams, salsas, and even Bloody Mary mix. Most of it is even made with fruit from their farm. Fresh-picked fruit can be purchased inside, if you're not planning on picking your own. And who can resist an ice cream sundae made with freshly baked waffle cones and fresh-picked berries?!?!? Although, they had me at ice cream.

Inside, we purchased tickets for the Barnyard Adventure. We actually purchased the Combo Passes so we could visit Barnyard Adventure and take a ride on the Barnyard Express (it's only a dollar more). Next you have to bring your receipt to the barnyard behind the Marketplace and get your bracelets. Then the fun begins.

After saying hello to some friendly farm animals, our boys headed straight for the giant sandbox. There are plenty of trucks and digging toys, a tunnel to climb through, and a real boat that kids can sit in and  pretend to drive.

We skipped the playground and play house, and went straight for the duck races. They also have boat races, and plenty of spots to take fun photos, too.

After riding around on the tricycle track, we tried out the rope maze. It's harder than it looks, but it's easy to get out if needed.

Next stop: the jumping pillow! Just be sure your kids are wearing socks. No shoes are allowed, and the jumping pillow can get pretty hot in the sun.

The day isn't complete without checking out Goat Mountain and the giant slide. Look up and you'll see goats walking around above the barn and silo, along various walkways. On the other side of the silo, kids can climb up to the top of the tower and zip down the giant slide.

Inside the silo, run around, listen to your echo, and crawl through a tunnel. Adults, relax on a hay bale while the kids go crazy.

Be sure to bring some quarters; you'll want to feed the goats. Buy some animal food from the dispenser, drop it in the can and watch a goat pull the rope with his teeth until the can is at the top, where he can enjoy a well-deserved treat. Impressive trick!

Pedal cars, swings, a misting tent, and the Red Barn Twister are lots of fun. The twister is an oversized tunnel that spins. Kids can climb in while others turn it, and giggles will be unstoppable.

The Barnyard Express is a fun way to take a seat, take a break, and see the whole farm. Each animal car has a horn and bells to keep kids busy while they ride.

Finally! Time to pick some strawberries. We bought two four-quart baskets in the Marketplace, and we filled one with beautiful red berries.

 Then we walked over to the cherry orchard to fill our second basket with delicious, plump cherries.

We had a great day, and I'm already planning another trip when the blueberries are ripe in July. Between June and October, there are about a dozen different fruit and berry varieties that are available. Check their web site for updated picking conditions.

If you're planning a trip, Brown's Berry Patch is located at 14264 Roosevelt Highway (Route 18) in Waterport, NY. You can purchase a meal or snack in the Marketplace, or at the outdoor Farm Grill (weekends only). There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. There were posted signs near all outdoor tables indicating that coolers are not allowed. Restrooms are located in the Marketplace.

We ended our visit right around dinner time and found a decent, low-key restaurant about five minutes away: Black North Inn. It was relatively kid-friendly. The staff was friendly, there is a kids' menu, and if you can get a table facing the water, the boats outside may be enough to occupy the kids while the adults have a real conversation. At least for a few minutes. (Non-kid-friendly note: there is no changing table in the restroom). We ordered the Chevre-Portobello Pizza, and I was sad the next day when the leftovers were gone.
